What is a Niche and Why Should Your Restaurant Have One?

What is a Niche and Why Should Your Restaurant Have One?

You’d think having items that cater to almost everyone would be the best option for a successful restaurant, right? In some cases it can be! But in other cases, things get over done, boring, or just end up not competing well with competitors who are offering the same thing. That’s when you need to take a step back and think outside the box. Offer food that people wouldn’t have even thought of, and the people who did think of it (or something similar) would be even more attracted to your restaurant. That’s where you find your niche.

What is a niche, you may ask? A niche is a specific part of the market that sets you apart from others, while attracting likeminded individuals. Every successful restaurant has a niche if you really think about it. McDonalds’ niche is fast, consistent-quality food, while Red Lobster’s niche is… well, lobster. There are so many different types of people who want so many different types of things. If someone wants fast food they will most likely be more inclined to go to McDonalds or another niche specific place like it. If someone wants lobster or seafood in general they’ll likely opt for Red Lobster or restaurants alike.

Those are just some examples, but there is no limit to what your niche can be. If you want your niche to be a homey feeling family diner, do things that will implement that idea like serving your family’s recipes or decorating the place like your living room. If your niche is partying, invest in loud speakers and flashing lights while serving finger foods and cocktails. If your niche is expensive dinners, maybe look into having a live band playing classical music, or even implementing a dress code for guests. There are little things to think about when executing your niche that make a huge impact.

By implementing your niche you’ll find that your business will begin booming if it’s done correctly. If people mention they want to eat at a family diner, your home-style restaurant may pop up in conversation or even become a regular spot to visit for likeminded individuals. If someone is planning a crazy bachelor party dinner they may be inclined to try out your restaurant since it supplies the party essentials they’re looking for. If someone is thinking about going on an expensive date, they may look for the fanciest place in town to really impress their date and they’ll consider you over any other business.

Find a reason for your guests to stay or visit again. It’s easier than you think!
